Biography[]

Will McAvoy approaches Brian Brenner to write a piece about the new approach of his News Night program. He selects Brian specifically because of their history; In 2005, Brian was in a relationship with MacKenzie McHale, but eventually dumped her. MacKenzie dealt with the rejection poorly, and therefore saw it as a form of redemption, a way to relieve the feeling of rejection, when Brian started calling her again in 2006 after she had started going out with Will (which Brian was not aware of at the time). She then had an affair with Brian for four months during her relationship with Will, until both relationships ended in early 2007. Brian later claims she was really cheating on him with Will, though MacKenzie is adamant that it was the other way around.

At least part of the reason why Will chose to have Brenner do a piece on News Night is because he still hasn't forgiven MacKenzie for the infidelity, and knows that it is painful for her to have Brian around the office. This is something Will's therapist Points out to him.
