Jennifer Johnson, commonly called Jenna, is a college student. She attended a question and answer session at Northwestern University to speak to Will McAvoy, Lewis and Sharon. While waiting in line for the event, she ran into MacKenzie McHale, explaining that she wanted to ask the three what makes America the greatest country on Earth. Sensing an opportunity, Mac advised her on where to sit in order to catch Will's attention. ("What Kind of Day Has It Been") After seeing a message from Mac stating "It's not but it can be," McAvoy rebuked her naivete and offered data undermining her assumption, before offering reasons it could be that again: unfortunately, it was the first half of his tirade that caught attention and essentially ruined his neutral stance as a journalist in the public eye. ("We Just Decided To")

Jenna graduated from Northwestern a year early and started watching News Night regularly. After reading about Will's comments on the "greater fool" in a recent report and a New York Magazine article, she realized she wanted to work with him and applied for an internship at ACN. Will noticed her from across the newsroom during the broadcast that day but could not remember where he had seen her before until she was in the middle of an interview with Mac, which he immediately interrupted. After hearing out why she wanted to work for him, he asked her to repeat the question of what makes America the greatest country in the world. Will replied "You do," before telling Mac to hire her. ("The Greater Fool")

As an intern, Jenna worked directly under Will, reminding him of his various tasks for the day and occasionally being asked to do fact-checks for him. Charlie Skinner expressed surprise at her presence upon recognizing her as "Sorority Girl" ("First Thing We Do, Let’s Kill All the Lawyers"), and Will was not above reminding her she was partially responsible for his career shift when he was annoyed by her. ("Red Team III")
